A 500-level student of the Faculty of Law, Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Uwanyi Onyekachi, has been stabbed to death by a truck driver. Onyekachi was stabbed by the driver of a truck carrying soft drinks on Sunday around Igando area of Lagos but later died in the hospital.
The Acting Director of the university’s Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ademole Adekoya, said normalcy had returned to the university following spontaneous protest by the students.
Investigations showed that the late Onyekachi, who was among the students being conveyed by a bus that was hit by the truck, had engaged the truck driver in an argument.
The driver was said to have brought out a sharp object from the vehicle and stabbed the student, who was rushed to an undisclosed hospital by the student. Other students reported the issue to the Students’ Union President, Samuel Sonaya, during the institution’s 21st Convocation Coconut-breaking festival, who in turn mobilised to the scene in protest.
Sonaya was then arrested by the policemen from the Igando Police Division; the development that aggravated the situation, leading to the deployment of tear gas and live bullets to disperse the crowd by the police.
The development disrupted commercial activities in the area with both human and vehicular movements affected for many hours. Meanwhile, according to Adekoya, following the intervention of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, the state Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, ordered the release of the students’ union president and the detention of the truck driver.
