Senate moves to bar non-career civil servants from heading agencies

Against the backdrop of the current controversy between the Senate and the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali(rtd), Senate Spokesman, Aliyu Sabi, yesterday, said that he would initiate a law that would bar noncareer civil servants from heading government agencies and parastatals.

Sabi stated this while reacting to the refusal of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali’s (rtd) to wear agency’s uniform as well as his proposed policy for vehicle owners to pay duty on their vehicles.

He said that it was a disservice for civil servants not to be given the opportunity to head organisations they laboured for many decades to build, only for a noncareer person to be appointed to take their jobs. According to Sabi, bringing people from outside to head the agencies and parastatals had done more harm than good to the organisations.
