JUST IN: 20 killed in Ebira, Bassa communal clash in Nasarawa



No fewer than 20 people have been reportedly killed at Ugya in Toto local government area of Nasarawa state in a  communal clash that sparked off between the Ebira and Bassa ethnic groups in the state.

The bloody class coming many debates particularly in 1997 when the two tribes engaged each other in a was of attrition leading to the death of hundreds of people on both sides with more causality on Bassa tribe during former president Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

The development comes barely a farthing ago when suspected Ak 47wielding suspected herdsmen sack and killed over 79 Tiv people in
five local government areas of Doma, Keana, Obi and Awe and parts of Lafia locals government areas of the without anus challenge from
security agents in the state.

A member of the vigilante group in the area, Yahaya Toto, said the Bassa people were seen moving out of Ugya village in large numbers on Monday without disclosing the impending attack to their Ebira neighbours.

He said: “On seeing that Bassa people were leaving the town, some of our people started to move out in panic but prevailed on them not to because no reason was offered by the Bassa people to warrant them deserting their
ancestral home”.

Another vigilante leader in the area who craved anonymity alleged that the Bassa people had engaged the services of mercenaries who attacked the Ebira people in the early hours of Tuesday killing many and burning down houses.

He said the mercenaries, clad in red, stormed the rural town on over 50 motorcycles and started shooting sporadically forcing residents to flee to the bush,  who have still chased after and hacked to death.

“As soon as soldiers arrived the town, the mercenaries deserted the town although one has been captured.” He added. DSP Kennedy Idirisu, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) told New Telegraph in Lafia that the skirmish was a spill-over of the attacks in Kogi.

“We received information about the crisis this morning and our findings revealed that the situation is a spillover from the crisis in Kogi state
over the weekend,” he said.

Idirisu said although the Police could not ascertain any casualty figures at the moment, the state command was doing its best to contain the situation and avert bloodletting.

He said the Nasarawa Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmed Bello had directed the deployment of an officer from the New Karu and Keffi area commands to reinforce the personnel already on ground in the area.

He called on the people of the area to refrain from taking laws into their hands and seek redress over grievances through constituted authority.

Meanwhile, the PPRO Kogi state command, ASP William Ovye told newsmen in a telephone conversation that the attack in Bassa local government of Kogi state on Sunday led to the death 7 persons with so many houses burnt.

PHOTOS: Dino Melaye lands in hospital after attempting to escape from police vehicle



Embattled Senator Dino Melaye has been admitted to Zankli hospital in the Mabushi district of Abuja after getting injured when he allegedly jumped off a police vehicle conveying him to court in Lokoja, Kogi state.

The hospital ambulance brought him to the hospital around 4:25 pm, after which he was admitted to the emergency unit.

Mr Melaye is wanted over his alleged involvement in the supply of arms to some political thugs arrested in Kogi State.

The senator who represents Kogi west was on Tuesday morning arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP’s) Monitoring Unit in Abuja, after driving himself to the office of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS).

Recall that the lawmaker was detained and later released at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on his way to Morroco on Monday morning.

$462 Million Tucano Jets: PDP Reps member calls for Buhari’s impeachment



Kingsley Chinda, the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts, has called for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari over the withdrawal of $462 million to pay for 12 Super Tucano jets.

Recall that President Buhari had approved the withdrawal $462 million from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) to the United States government for the procurement of the aircraft without a prior approval of the National Assembly.

A letter from President Muhammadu Buhari to the leadership of the National Assembly had explained that the U.S. government had given a payment deadline for the aircraft purchase, otherwise, the contract would lapse.

This explanation did not go down well with the lawmakers who argued it was an impeachment offence.

Hon Chinda, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing represents Obio Akpor Federal Constituency of Rivers state immediately called for the impeachment of the President.

But in a tactical move, the leadership of the House suspended till another legislative day, debate on the payment for the jets.
