Former National Publicity Secretary of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Mr. Anthony Sani, has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for releasing the schedule of the 2019 general elections almost two years to the polls.
Speaking to New Telegraph in an exclusive interview, Sani said releasing the election date very early will enable Nigerians and political parties to be aware and prepare for the elections.
His words: “I see nothing wrong in the release of time table by INEC two years to the time.
This would enable Nigerians and the political parties to be aware and prepare for the elections. After all, the United States from which we copied our presidential system has a fixed date of November for its presidential elections.
“I consider the early release of the time table by INEC as positive move for both INEC and the electorate for the purpose of well informed preparations for the elections by both the commission and the voters.
Albeit, one would prefer the elections of the president, National Assembly, governors and state assembly to be conducted on the same day in order to reduce cost and bandwagon effect.” Sani, also said the delay in the appointment of Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) will not affect the schedule.
He said: “I don’t think the issues about many states not having Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) and inability of some electorate to have Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will affect the election dates. INEC has told the nation that before 2019 comes, the commission would be prepared.
I believe before the time comes, all the commissioners of INEC would have been appointed by the president. I also believe the president can make the appointment any time he wants to do so.”
