The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the early hours of Monday recorded minor fire incident. The commission, on its twitter handle posted at about 5.09p.m. on Monday, said the “officers of the Fire Service and the Commission just put off a minor fire incident. No loss of life and no loss of sensitive documents.”
INEC director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr. Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, who confirmed this in a telephone interview last night said the incident happened at the first floor of the commission. “It’s just on the first floor.
There is no major incident; we said so in our twitter handle. We posted the photograph. No one was injured, no serious damage. We did not just report it, we showed the photograph,” Osaze stated.
In 2015, just before the general elections, the commission recorded a fire incident at its warehouse along Airport Road. Again, only materials, which were supposed to be used in the 2011 elections were affected.
The incident was blamed on power surge at the control switch. However, no reason was given as the cause of Monday’s minor incident at the commission’s headquarters at Maitama, Abuja.
