According to the Holy Book, hope deferred makes the heart sick. This appears to be the lot of aspirants jostling to take a shot at the local government election in Lagos State. For over two years, the apprehension and anxiety on when the grassroots election would hold has been a consistent thematic.

With several reasons being adduced for the failure to get the election up and running, the 20 local governments and 37 local council development areas are currently being managed by sole administrators.

Notably among the issues preventing the roll-out of schedule for the election include the non-receipt of voters’ register from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), delineation of constituencies and wards, legal challenge by the National Conscience Party (NCP), debate over usage of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) or not, among others. Currently, INEC delineated the state into 245 wards while LASIEC delineated the state into 346 wards.

Signs that the election might happened soon came to light after the Lagos Assembly passed the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) Amendment Law and the Election Tribunal Law.

But months after the passage, the story is still the same. For aspirants, it’s an endless wait and many of them are already dropping out of the race after exhausting their energies and resources. It was learnt that some in anticipation that the election might hold anytime soon had sold off their properties.

Although financial provisions for the election is in the 2017 appropriation of the state, many are still skeptical about the possibility of the election holding simply because the first quarter of the year is almost gone and there is no notice of election yet.

While some opposition parties are claiming that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is only buying time due to its dwindling popularity in the state, those in the known in the state electoral commission said the delay has to do with logistics challenge.

Head or tail, its pertinent that the Justice Ayotunde Philips-led LASIEC sets the ball rolling, cross its I’s and dots its T’s to saved the aspirants the anxiety, proved those insinuating that it is acting in consonance to dictates of the APC-led administration wrong and also ensure that a validly and constitutionally elected leaders are put in the saddle of the third tier government.
