An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State yesterday remanded a 57-year-old mortuary attendant, Muritala Raimi, in the Agodi Federal Prison for allegedly decapitating and stealing a human skull from the mortuary.
The accused, who was working at the mortuary of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, was arraigned by the police on a twocount charge of stealing and misconduct.
Though he pleaded not guilty to the crime, he was unable to meet the bail conditions set by the magistrate, Akanbi Monsurat. So, he was taken to the Agodi Prison, pending the perfection of the bail conditions
. According to the charge sheet signed by a superintendent of police, Adeniyi Odebiyi, the accused “on the 15th May, 2017 about 05.30 p.m. at UCH, Ibadan in Ibadan Magisterial District did steal human skull inside UCH mortuary and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 3 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. 11 Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria”.
In her ruling, the magistrate admitted Raimi to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in the like sum. She ordered that “one of the sureties must be a member of the family”.
According to the first information from the police, the accused was arrested after he had allegedly decapitated the remains of the unknown deceased, concealed the severed head in a bag and attempted to move it out when he was caught. The secret deal having been blown open, Raimi allegedly attempted to run away but was apprehended by the police and later taken to Yemetu Police Station, Ibadan.
