Zenith Bank-Delta Principal’s Cup: 25 LG winners emerge Thursday

Local Government winners will this Thursday emerge at the ongoing Zenith Bank-sponsored Delta State Principals’ Cup. The competition which started on March 16 with Okwe Secondary School defeating Zappa Mixed Secondary School 1-0 in the opening match has thrown up great talents in the state.

According to the organisers, a winner each will emerge from the 25 Local Governments of the state and will be grouped into eight where the quarterfinalists will emerge.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Delta State, Chiedu Ebie, has promised good football with the best school emerging champions at the final already scheduled for May 27 to coincide with the children’s day celebration. Ebie also said mechanism had been put in place to detect any mercenary from the schools so has to have a worthy champion. “Apart from working with the schools competing in the competition, we have a group of technical/verification committee that would be on the lookout for any student that is above the stipulated age of 16,” he said.

“This is a formative competition and we cannot afford to mess it up by allowing for mercenaries to compete for schools. Any school(s) caught in any act of malpractices would be expelled from the competition.” Reiterating the statement of the commissioner, the Deputy Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Ebenezer Onyeagwu, said schools should not be involved in act that would destroy the legacy of the competition.

Cow throws football club into crisis

It appears that the issue of cows causing havoc is not limited to only Nigeria if news out of Scotland is anything to go by.

According to multiple reports, a cow in that country has caused crisis for a Scottish Championship club after a runaway hit its reserve goalkeeper.

Queen of the South’s Sam Henderson, 19, hurt his shoulder in the incident on his father’s farm.

First choice goalkeeper Alan Martin is out with a thigh injury with Jack Leighfield standing in.

Henderson was on the bench for last weekend’s draw with Morton and was expected to do the same against Dunfermline on Saturday.

However, the accident has meant he is facing a race to be fit.

Regular number one Martin is expected to be out for five to six weeks which meant Leighfield played at the weekend.

That saw youth team keeper Henderson promoted to the bench last Saturday.

He was expected to take the same spot for the clash with Dunfermline this weekend which is vital to the Dumfries side’s promotion play-off hopes.

The club confirmed Henderson had been struck by a cow and injured his shoulder and was now an injury doubt.
