As part of efforts to revive the game of squash in the country, a consortium of ex-professionals has concluded plans to host the maiden edition of Ex-Squash Pros National Junior Squash Tournament billed for April 27 till 29 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
According to the Technical Director of the tournament, Wilson Egberijou, who is also the Chairman of Bayelsa Squash Association; “The Ex-Squash Pros is a group of former Nigerian professional squash players both in Nigeria and in the Diaspora which was formed in December 2016. “The group is putting this tournament in place as our own contribution to the development of sports in Nigeria.
The competition is solely sponsored by the contributions of members of the group without any government or private intervention.” For Bolaji Mogaji, President of Squash Referees, “We are expecting about 150 athletes across the states including the FCT. About 28 states have confirmed participation with Lagos having the highest number of athletes of 43 boys and girls, followed by Rivers and Plateau states with 12 players each.”
The organisers are responsible for the accommodation and feeding with players contesting in four categories namely U-16 boys and girls and the U-19 boys and girls.
