This is not the best of times for teachers of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Staff School due to non-payment of their nine-month salary arrears by the university management.
Piqued by the development, the teachers, who lamented their inability to meet their immediate family needs, were said to have trooped to the University Freedom Park last week to protest what they described as the management’s insensitivity to their plight occasioned by their poor working condition.
The protesting teachers, who trooped out in their large number, carrying placards of various inscriptions, demanded the payment of their outstanding salaries by the management of the university, the proprietor of the staff school. One of the protesting teachers, Mr. Owolawi Olaniyi, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, however, noted: “The management of the university has been insensitive to our predicament without any move to assuage our suffering.
When we approach our Cooperative Society for loan facilities, we were sent back on excuse that there was no money for teachers of the staff school. We cannot take this anymore. After all, the university workers are receiving their salary as at when due, while we were left to suffer.”
Also, Mr. Adeyemi Adelekan expressed the teachers’ displeasure over the unpaid salary, saying they could no longer take any more. ‘What we are demanding is the immediate payment of our nine months’ salary arrears for us to provide for our family needs,” he said.
