The ward chairman to the newly elected Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Evang. Isaac A. Egagifo, has been assassinated. The victim was killed exactly seven days after the lawmaker, Sheriff Oboriowori, who hails from ward 7, he was in-charge of, emerged as the Speaker of the House. His assailants allegedly cut him with a rough and heavy substance at Mejere town in Okpe axis of the state, and left him to die in his pool of blood. It could not be immediately ascertained whether the gruesome murder had a political undertone.
A member of the family, Mr. Obaro Egagifo, told Saturday Telegraph that a prime suspect had been arrested and transferred to the Criminal Investiation Department (CID) and Homicide Department of the police headquarters in Asaba respectively for further investigations. While the Speaker has described the killing as “callous and barbaric”, he lamented the great shock with which he received the news.
