Acura will launch a new design theme when it unveils a luxury SUV on Jan. 15 at the North American International Auto Show.
Acura calls the vehicle a prototype, but the brand’s auto-show prototypes are always nearly identical to its production models. Acura is Honda’s luxury brand.
The new RDX is expected to go on sale in 2018 as a 2019 model. It was designed and developed in the U.S. and is the first production vehicle to use a design theme that debuted on Acura’s Precision concept in 2016.
The Precision concept featured a long hood, sloping roof, prominent hexagonal grille, narrow lights and sharp creases along the fenders and doors. In a brief video, the production RDX appears to share all those design elements, toned down for easy production and a mainstream audience.
The RDX will use a new architecture that Honda says it developed exclusively for Acura. That would be a significant departure for Acura, which has historically struggled for the corporate resources necessary to develop vehicles competitive with other luxury brands.
The RDX’s interior will build on the looks and features in the Precision Cockpit model Acura introduced in 2016. The Precision Cockpit featured seats similar to Acura’s NSX exotic car and a large screen mounted atop the dashboard with features controlled by a touchpad in the center console.
