InsideMainland partners Social Media Week Lagos to Host Session on Citizen Journalism

Lagos Mainland’s most authoritative community news portal, InsideMainland.com, is partnering the organizers of Social Media Week (SMW) Lagos, to host a session on citizen and community journalism.

The Social Media Week, is an annual worldwide event hosted in over 20 cities, which seeks to explore the social, cultural and economic impact of social media. Its mission is to help people and organizations connect through collaboration, learning and the sharing of ideas and information. The 2018 Lagos edition is scheduled to hold from Monday, February 26 to Friday, March 2, 2018, at the prestigious Landmark Event Centre, Lagos Water Corporation Drive, Oniru, Lagos.

InsideMainland’s session, themed ‘Bringing Lagos ‘Closer’ through Social Media inspired Community Journalism’ (#SMWCloser), will take place on Monday, February 26, 2018, by 1:30 pm on Floor 3, SMW Lagos Campus at the Landmark Center, Oniru, Lagos.

The panelists for the InsideMainland session include; the Honourable Commissioner for Information & Strategy, Lagos State Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan; the Assistant Director, Programmes, Radio One 103.5 FM, Mrs, Funke-Treasure Durodola; President, Association of Practitioners of Community Media of Nigeria and Publisher, Today Community Newspapers (Ilupeju Today, GRA Ikeja Today & Fela Today), Mr. Adedayo Akintobi, Media personality and former presenter of Areaaa show, a grassroots target programme on Top Radio 90.9 FM, Tosyn Bucknor; and Odion Aleobua, founder InsideMainland and Modion Communications, a full spectrum communications agency. The session will be moderated by one of Nigeria’s seasoned journalists, author and founder of The Journalism Clinic, Mr. Taiwo Obe.

Commenting on event, the founder of InsideMainland, Odion Aleobua said: “The session aims to educate, inform, and open the minds of the citizens and participants to the power and opportunities of citizen journalism and community media in fostering an accountable governance in Nigeria. I believe it will empower citizens to understand and play the role of change agents in their respective communities; thereby bringing democratic gains closer to the people.

This year’s edition of the SMW Lagos 2018 is themed “Closer” and has the underlying intention of exploring the intensifying conflict between community and individualism. The conversation will bring together a diversity of perspectives to discuss the most productive ways to harness these forces to drive innovation, improve consumer experiences and bring people together.

Oyo provides 15 motorised boreholes for markets

The Oyo State Government through the Sustainable Development Goals Office has constructed 15 motorised boreholes in some major markets in the state. The State Commissioner for Finance and Budget, Mr. Abimbola Adekanmbi, at the commissioning of one of the boreholes at Bodija Market, Ibadan, explained that the project was completed through the Conditional Grants Scheme, noting that the project is in line with achieving Goals 3 and 6 of the SDG which is Good Health and Clean Water Sanitation.

Adekanmbi, who is the also the chairman of the Conditional Grants Scheme, said the boreholes tagged Ajumose Water Points had been provided with a standby generator, stating that Bola Ige International Gbagi Market, Ibadan, Bembo Market, Apata, Ibadan, Eleeka Market, Oyo, Bodija Market, Ibadan Saasa Market, Ibadan and Towobowo Market, Igboora, the largest market in Ibarapa zone of the state, are some of the beneficiaries of the project. He pointed out that two of the boreholes are located at Sabo Market, Ibadan, while Omi Adio Market, Apata, Ibadan, Obanisunwa Market, Ayete, Aaraada Market, Ogbomoso, Odo- Oba Market, Odo-Oba, Ogo- Oluwa, Oja Agbe Market, Iseyin, Olorunda Market, Iganna and Owode Market, Igboho have one each. Speaking at the inauguration, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun, said the market men and women were integral parts of the government, promising that the government will provide more infrastructures for the people of the state.

He said the informal sector is key to the increased IGR of the state, stating that more is expected from the market men and women to ensure that the government provides more facilities for the people.

Katsina, Kano, UNICEF strategise for child survival

As part of efforts to consolidate on the gains already made in the promotion of child survival, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Katsina and Kano State Governments are meeting in Kaduna to develop a five-year work plan for 2018 to 2022.

The plan when developed would be the first in the current UNICEF country programme for 2018, which covers Katsina and Kano states with partners from Health, Nutrition, Education, WASH and the Media. It would also entail, periodic social media content and traditional (print, online and broadcast) to highlight collaboration and outcomes, media participation at mid and end of year review meetings and report on key results.

Speaking yesterday at the closing ceremony of the states’ engagement planning meeting, Secretary to the Kano State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, said both governments should be ready and determined to give required attention for proper implementation of intervention programmes in the next five years and beyond. He said: “The commitment we are talking about here of course is funding, government must take the issue of funding very seriously and give the programme the deserved attention.

“Data collection too is very important, and there is need for synergy between government agencies, we also need to start working our talk by involving new strategies that will give us different results.”

He said for the public to appreciate what government is doing, they need to be empowered both economically and educationally, saying, educating the people will also help them to harness what they have. He also commended UNICEF for her support for Katsina and Kano States, over the years and called participants to drive the entire process that will lead to effective implementation of the work plan.

Police arrest mastermind of Imo bank robbery

  • Says suspect got N400, 000 from the operation

The Imo State Police Command has wrapped up investigation into the robbery incident which occurred at Zenith Bank in Owerri, with the arrest of the fleeing mastermind of the crime, Chinonso Gift Onwuegbuchulam, by operatives of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS). A four-man robbery gang had on February 22, 2017, raided the Wethdral Road branch of the bank, which eventually led to the death of one of the bandits and two police officers.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, who paraded the 29-year Onwuegbuchulam, alias Ogoli, who had remained at large since the dastardly attack, said the incident went viral on social media with Chinonso identified as the man that collected the money from the victim through a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage provided by the bank. While addressing journalists at the police command, Ezike said the suspect was arrested by the SARS operatives even as he disclosed that the suspect confessed to the crime and admitted he got N400, 000 from the loot.

The commissioner said three of the gang members had been arrested, while some arms and ammunition were recovered and four cars of different brands were also recovered. The commissioner said the suspect, who hails from Obazu Mbieri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State was arrested on February 21 in his hideout at Close 7, Mgbuakara Eleparawan, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Ezike said: “He has confessed to the crime and further admitted that out of the N2.8 million they stole, he got a share of N400, 000.

He further confessed to have been in armed robbery business since 2012 and has participated in many robbery operations at Lagos, Port Harcourt and Owerri between 2012 and 2017.” The commissioner said the arrest of Chinonso signalled the end of the criminal gang and their activities.
