Attempted murder: ‘Retired general’ slumps in prison

Planned arraignment of a 67-year-old self-acclaimed retired general, Alhaji Abdul Rauf Tijani, for attempted murder and robbery before an Ikeja High Court, Lagos, was yesterday stalled on the grounds of ill health.

Tijani was to be arraigned alongside Akanni Suada on a five-count charge bothering on attempted murder, robbery, assault occasioning harm and killing an unborn child, was said to have slumped in Kirikiri Maximum Prison where he was remanded.

Tijani’s lawyer, O. A. Afolabi, informed the court that the defendant was rushed to the hospital after he slumped.


He said: “My Lord, the prison warders informed me that the 1st defendant, Tijani, slumped inside the prison yesterday and has been admitted at the hospital. “Since then, he is yet to recover fully in order to appear in court for his arraignment.”


However, according to the charge, the incident occurred on October 11, 2013 at No. 117, Akowonjo Road, Lagos.

The charge reads in part: “Alhaji Abdul Rauf Tijani and Akanni Suada on October 11, 2013 attempted to kill Maria Febisola (F) by shooting her with a gun. “Tijani and Suada, while armed with a rifle, did rob Maria Febisola of N2.5 million and a handbag containing some cash and jewellery worth N3 million. T

he two men were also accused of unlawfully killing an unborn child by causing rupture of the foetus in the womb of Abidemi Ahmed (F).
