Kano Pillars forward Junior Lokosa and Abdu Maikaba of Akwa United have been named the League Bloggers Awards Player and Manager respectively in the Nigeria Professional Football League for the month of January.
Lokosa and Maikaba emerged winners for their outstanding performance with their clubs in the month of January. They finished head and shoulders ahead of six other nominees from LBA’s shortlist of four each in the player’s and manager’s categories.
The Kano Pillars striker, currently the leading scorer in the country’s top division, accounted for 67 percent of his club’s total goals in January. He scored six goals in six matches, only failing to score in the 0-0 draw at El-Kanemi Warriors.
It was in the game against title holders Plateau United that Lokosa netted twice to help his club to a 2-0 success. His tally ensured he won the player’s award for January ahead the trio of Samad Kadiri of Lobi Stars as well as the Akwa United pair of Victor Mbaoma and Dennis Nya who also had impressive outings in their first month of the season.
Lokosa’s other goals came in the games against Katsina United, Nasarawa United, Rivers United and Abia Warriors.
Maikaba, on the other hand, came out tops for the manager’s award in a field that included Plateau United’s Kennedy Boboye, Ibrahim Musa of Kano Pillars and Duke Udi of Sunshine Stars.
The Akwa United head coach led his team to finish top of the log in January. His team won four out of their six matches including a 2-1 win at Tornadoes. Maikaba’s team also drew 1-1 at FC Ifeanyiubah in their last game in January.
The only blemish for Maikaba’s men in the month under review was a one-nil defeat at Go Round FC on the second matchday of the season.
Asaba 2018 African Senior Athletics Championship: Zenith Bank emerges official sponsor
Nigeria’s leading commercial bank, Zenith Bank Plc is now the official sponsor of the Asaba 2018 African Senior Athletics Championship.
In a statement signed by Olukayode Thomas on behalf of the Local Organising Committee, LOC for Asaba 2018, he said Zenith Bank was the preferred choice as official sponsor due to the bank’s impeccable track record.
“Zenith Bank was the preferred choice because of their commitment to the country, Delta state, sports development and even youth empowerment which we have seen the results across the country.” He said.
The deal with Zenith Bank was brokered by the Championship Consultant and Head of Brand and Communication, Mr. Bukola Olopade who is the Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Limited.
Asaba 2018 African Senior Athletics Championship is one of the biggest athletics events of 2018 as it will serve as trials for the 2018 IAAF Continental Cup in Czech Republic.
Top names in the African athletics scene including the likes of Isaac Makwala, Marie-Josée Ta Lou, Caster Semenya, Wayde Van Niekerk, Akani Simbine, Julius Yego and of course stars from the home front, Blessing Okagbare, Tobiloba Amusan , Divine Oduduru among others are all expected to light up the tracks in Asaba.
The LOC and all the other members of the organizing committee for Asaba 2018 are quite delighted that a leading brand like Zenith Bank is associating itself with the African Championships.
They urged other brands to emulate Zenith Bank as the African Championships like sports in general help to engage the youth and give them a platform to rightly channel their energy and make the best off it.
Already, organizers have promised that like Delta State did when it hosted the Africa Youth Athletics Championships, AYAC and produced tops stars like Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume and Divine Oduduru among others, much more will be achieved at the Asaba 2018 Championships.
The Asaba 2018 African Senior Athletics Championship will hold from August 1-5, 2018.
Wike, Pinnick hail The Sun over World Cup seminar
The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, and the President of the Nigeria Football Federation,Amaju Pinnick, have showered praises on the management of the Sun Newspapers over the stagingbof World Cup Seminar to boost the country’s participation in the 2018 Mundial
The World Cup starts next month on Russia and in an event that took place at Presidential Hotel Port Harcourt the newspaper outfit brought together stakeholders in the game to discuss Nigeria’s participation in the event.
Wike stressed that the seminar was timely because there was need for the Eagles to make good impact this time at the World Cup
“Rivers started it all for Eagles and I want them to go all the way at World Cup. We have a special package to be unfolded soon forbthw team. I thank the Sun for this noble event, ” Wike said.
NFF boss, Pinnick, also said it was good to have stakeholders discuss the prospects of Eagles participation in the 2018 World Cup.
“It is a good gesture and first ofvits kind ” he said. One of the discussants, Dr Patrick Ekeji also hailed Rivers and the Sun for putting together the seminar.
MD of The Sun, Eric Osagie, thanked all participants and stressed that football was more than a sport because it is a unifying factor in Nigeria.
Pinnick hails Moses, advises focus on World Cup
President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick has congratulated Super Eagles’ ace Victor Moses following the utility player’s triumph in the English FA Cup with Chelsea FC at the weekend.
A lone strike from the penalty spot by Eden Hazard against Manchester United at Wembley brought joy to the blue side of London and made Moses the sixth Nigerian to experience glory in the oldest knockout competition in world football. Before him were John Fashanu, Daniel Amokachi, Nwankwo Kanu, John Utaka and Mikel John Obi. Obi, who is captain Moses and others at the FIFA World Cup, won also with Chelsea.
“I am happy for Victor Moses because this triumph sets him in a great mood and gives immense confidence for the FIFA World Cup in Russia. We have a number of friendly matches before the FIFA World Cup but the big focus is on the finals starting next month.
“Victory in the FA Cup is good for Moses as he will come into camp buoyed in spirit, and that good feeling is bound to infect and affect the other players positively,” Pinnick said on Monday.
Pinnick also applauded the good number of Super Eagles’ players who finished the season on a high, and those who were instrumental to their clubs’ accomplishments during the season, stating that confidence is key to facing up to the kind of opposition available at the FIFA World Cup.
Moses, who is the reigning NFF Football Awards Player of the Year, was the Super Eagles’ highest goalscorer in the FIFA World Cup African qualifying series with three goals. He netted a brace against Algeria in November 2016 and got the third in the 4-0 whiplash of African champions Cameroon on 1st September 2017, which set the Eagles on the path to Russia.
The Chelsea wingback, who plays as an attacking midfielder for the Eagles, will join up with his international team-mates in Uyo later this week, ahead of Monday’s international friendly against the Simba of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Port Harcourt.
The Super Eagles will then take on England in a prestige encounter at Wembley Stadium in London on 2nd June, before trading tackles with the Czech Republic in Austria on 6th June. The team will camp for nine days at the Avita Resort in Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Austria before flying to their team base camp in Yessentuki, Stavropol region of Russia on 11th June.
