Two years after the validation of the election of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, it has dawned on the country that God saved the state for a major reason.
Imagine for a minute if the Supreme Court had ruled otherwise on January 27, 2016. Nigeria would have been in circumstances worse than what is obtainable today.
It is now in the public domain why the APC-led Federal Government fought desperately to subvert the will of Rivers people. The APC wanted the continuous theft of Rivers resources to serve external forces who are less concerned about the development of the state.
After all, the immediate past Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi bankrolled the APC at all levels ahead of the 2015 elections.
Shortly after the judgement that validated the election of Governor Wike, the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odighie-Oyegun said: “We have lost a very important resource-rich state to the PDP. No matter how crude oil prices have fallen, it is still the most important revenue earner for the country.”
For the people of Rivers State, they voted for Wike because of his track record, commitment to their welfare and his dedication to the defence of the ideals of the homeland.
Before the validation, Wike rolled out projects in large numbers. Many suggested that he did so to position himself for a rerun should the Supreme Court rule against him. The Supreme Court ruled in his favour, but he has remained focused on projects delivery, because productivity is in his DNA.
One of the best outcomes of the 2015 general elections was the emergence of Wike, despite the conspiracy against the state. The forces of political darkness planned to impose a political houseboy on the state against the wish of Rivers people.
The loss of the political conspirators is the gain of Nigeria. This is because Wike has emerged as the right combination of positive politics and delivery of much-needed development.
However, in confirming the election of Governor Wike, the Supreme Court affirmed that no matter the evil machinations of a dictator, the rule of law must be upheld.
Had the APC Federal Government succeeded in subverting the will of justice, it would have been a free for all slide on all fronts. The Supreme Court stood strong, refusing to be intimidated by the deliberate falsehood and propaganda of the APC.
Since his victory, Wike has stood with the Rivers people and all Nigerians. He has been a champion of democracy, a great patriot and the courageous statesman redefining the process of politics in the country.
Wike is a political gadfly of sorts. The nation’s political conscience and the promoter of credible elections. He has insisted that the will of the people prevail at all times.
A political general, Wike led the people of Rivers State to victory in the course of the rerun elections where the APC Federal Government deployed security operatives and INEC officials to subvert the will of the people.
The people of Rivers State defied the booming guns of the Federal Government to enforce their preference of the PDP. Today, the state has continued to reap the benefits of having a great leader as governor.
But by far the most important benefit of having Wike around is his commitment to the promotion of apolitical security agencies. Today, the country is suffering from the politicization of security agencies by the APC Federal Government. The nationwide escalation of conflicts can be traced to the manipulation of the security agencies by the APC Federal Government.
Commenting on the second year anniversary of the Supreme Court judgement, Wike said: “We give God the glory, we give God all the honour because the 27th January 2016 was when the Supreme Court gave us the nod as people who were duly elected with the people’s mandate.
“We also commend the Supreme Court who have shown commitment to being the last hope of not only the common man, but everybody.”
The governor thanked Rivers people for their continuous support for his administration, saying that he will continue to use their mandate to develop the state.
He said: “I am quite impressed by the kind of support we are getting from everywhere. We will not renege on our promises; we will not disappoint them. All we need is their prayer.”
It is said that the voice of the people is the voice of God. The Supreme Court confirmed the choice of Rivers people, paving the way for the blessings of God to permeate the landscape of Rivers State in the form of mass delivery of projects by Wike.
