The crisis rocking Abia State Polytechnic yesterday took a new dimension as members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) barred the rector, Prof. Ezionye Eboh and other members of the institution including students from accessing the school premises.

NASU, however, joined other unions such as SSANIP (Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics) and ASUP (Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic) to protest against the unpaid salaries of members of staff. The unions said: “Today is exactly one week members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Abia State Polytechnic chapter started their strike while SSANIP joined them last week Wednesday and today members of NASU (Non- Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics), Abia Poly chapter joined the strike.

That is to say that the three staff unions are all out for this action. “The three staff unions; ASUP, SSANIP and NASU came out to make a bold statement to demand payment of our salaries which are in arrears of 11months. That is why you are seeing this and the union said that we can’t allow this place to remain open while our management goes in and out to fund their own pocket and welfare while neglecting the welfare of the workers. That is why you are seeing what you are seeing here today.”
