Regional security: Buratai warns Army chiefs against inaction

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has advocated continuous collaboration among African Armies against terrorism and other violent crimes, warning that “inaction” had the capacity to jeopardise the continent’s stability. Buratai gave the charge yesterday at the opening of the African Land Forces Summit holding in Abuja.

The summit, which was the sixth of its kind, would provide a platform for African Army Chiefs and other global partners to share experiences on security challenges, and strategies for containment.

The COAS, who thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for approving the hosting, further noted that “terrorism, proliferation of small arms, piracy and human trafficking remain the major security challenges facing the African continent with rippling effects across the globe.” According to the COAS: “Activities of violent extremist organizations such as Boko Haram, Al shabaab, Ansarudeen and Al Qaeda in the Magreb have continued to keep our security forces busy and committed to ensure safety of lives and properties.

“It is my view that combating the menace of Boko Haram and other violent extremist organizations would require collaborative efforts. “Therefore, I want to emphasize that our collective action and inaction will have an impact on our efforts to ensure safety and stability of our individual countries, Africa and the world in general.”
