Buhari to S’West APC leaders: Bring Ekiti back to progressives’ fold

President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged South West caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to bring Ekiti State back into the fold of progressive states.

The President, who gave the challenge during a dinner meeting with the caucus of the party in the South West on Wednesday night, said they could achieve this by ensuring electoral victory for the APC gubernatorial candidate, Kayode Fayemi , in the forthcoming governorship elections in the state. Buhari said members of the party must work together in the state to ensure that the will of the people was not subverted.

His words: “I know Ekiti fairly well and Ekiti people are well known for their forthrightness, candour and integrity. All of these values seem to have been lost and we must restore these values and return Ekiti to its pride of place in the comity of states.

“As we approach the 2019 elections, the return of Ekiti into the fold of progressive states is important as the election of July 14 is going to be a key pointer to subsequent elections. On my part, let me reassure you that you can count on my support. But charity must begin at home.

I urge Ekiti leaders and the leaders from the South-West to take this assignment seriously so that APC can laugh last in the July elections. It is only then that we will all be beneficiaries of victory.”

The President, who said he has received a full briefing from Governor Tankp Al-Makura on the exercise, commended Dr Fayemi for reaching out to his co-contestants with a view to working together.

He said: “Now that the party has completed that assignment through the very credible and transparent primary process led by Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura and a candidate has emerged from that keen contest, our job as party leaders is to build a united front that can propel our party to victory in this all important election.

“This is crucial because I remember the hanky-panky that attended the last gubernatorial election in Ekiti State in 2014. I recall the firsthand account I received from some of the dramatis personae in that unfortunate saga.

We must do everything to ensure that we do not allow any subversion of the will of the people this time around.” Former Interim National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, who spoke to correspondents after the meeting, assured that the caucus would do all it could within the electoral process to secure victory for the APC candidate in the election. Among those at the dinner were Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; former governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba and the National Chairman of APC, John Odigie- Oyegun. All the 33 governorship aspirants, along with Fayemi and former governor Segun Oni, partook in the dinner. Governors at the meeting included Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and the Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, who was the chairman of APC Ekiti Governorship primaries committee. Some members of the National Assembly, ministers and stakeholders from the South-West were also in attendance.
