No fewer than 20,000 children in both primary and secondary schools have been reportedly forced out of school in Nasarawa state following persistent attacks by suspected AK 47 wielding herdsmen on communities in the sourthern senatorial district of Nasarawa state.
The attacks which began in January this year following the implementation of Anti-Open grazing law in Benue state in border communities of Nasarawa and Bunue later escalated to all Tiv communities in the five local government areas of Awe, Keana, Obi and Doma in Nasarawa state displaced over 200.000 persons and forced about 20,000 children out of schools in the areas hit by the attacks.
The development forced government authorities to open camps for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in primary schools
forcing the remaining pupils from other tribes to stop schooling.
A primary school one of the schools in Kadarko town of Keana Local Government said that all primary school who spoke with our correspondent on a condition of anonymity said that both public and private school, had been shut down in the area since the attacks on
Tiv communities by the marauding herdsmen began in January this year.
It was gathered that the Tiv ethnic group, who were predominantly farmers, were reported to be one of the most populated ethnic nationalities in the Doma, Obi, Keana and Awe and Lafia LGAs in the state that was engulfed in the crisis.
When contacted, the Nasarawa State chairman of Universal Basic Education Board, Mohammed Dan’azumi, said that the board was still
taking statistics in order to ascertain the exact number of school children forced out of school in the wake of the attacks.
Dan’azumi, who directed the permanent member I, Hadiza Alakayi, to speak on his behalf, said: “The board has sent its instructors and
headmasters to collect statistics in the five LGAs, and they are yet to submit their report.
The situation is under control. We summoned education secretaries, supervisors and headmasters, to ensure that all schools should resume.
The board is going to monitor and supervise the situation base on the report recieved. The IDPs children shall be taken care of.”
