VDT Communications, one of the leading broadband communications service providers in Nigeria, has thrown its weight behind this year’s International Girls in ICT Day, which is being marked in Nigeria on May 3.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) sanctioned event, according to a statement, has become a global movement in which more girls and young women are learning about the wide range of fascinating opportunities ICT careers can offer.

Speaking on the company’s sponsorship of the event, VDT’s Managing director, Mr Abiodun Omoniyi, said the company has been supporting the organization of the event in Nigeria for the past three years, adding that the decision to continue the gesture was because of its desirable objectives. “The event encourages young girls from different secondary schools to develop interest in ICT in an attempt to strike a balance with the male professionals in the sector. It opens up a world of opportunities to young girls through the information that will be provided by various female ICT professional speakers whom they can easily identify with as role models and expand their career choices” he said.

According to him, VDT would enable the young girls to know the various services that a broadband company can offer by showcasing her various services at the event. “These services will include Digital Lease Circuit, Corporate Internet, Metro Wireless, Metro Fiber, ATM Solutions, Wi-FiHotspot and 4G LTE Advanced Retail Internet service”.

He added that the VDT is increasingly playing a unique role in sponsorship activities as part of its efforts at giving back to the society and promoting the industry as a whole. The company is a traditional sponsor of IPV6 Workshop organized yearly by ATCON, Digital Africa Conference and Exhibition and God’s Children Great Talent among several others. The company also operates a Modular Trainee Engineering Program since 2014 through, which it trains engineering graduates annually, free of charge to increase their employability in the industry.
