Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has described the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state as “a one-man show” and run with the sole aim of mortgaging the interest of the people.
Besides, the governor has challenged the party to make public evidence regarding its claim that he had misappropriated bailout funds meant for payment of arrears of salaries of workers as well as the Paris Club refunds.
Ortom was reacting to a statement by the party that despite huge borrowings and other interventions from the federal government, the state under his watch is still clouded with huge salary arrears and unpaid pensions of retired civil servants, huge deficits of basic infrastructure and porous security situation.
The state chapter of the party also regretted that the governor has jettisoned all issues it had raised with him in confidence for the purpose of repositioning governance to better the lot of people of the state and position the party on the path of victory ahead of the 2019 general elections.
But Governor Ortom, in a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Terver Akase, chastised the party for passing invective on him and challenged it to bring out facts to back their claim.
He denied diverting both the bailout and Paris Club funds as claimed by the party emphasising that he had been frugal with state funds, and had always made the state’s financial position clear at elaborate stakeholders meetings where he constantly gives briefings about the security and financial challenges confronting the state.
“Governor Ortom gave the people of the state information about the bailout, Paris Club refunds and all other federal government interventions and explained how they could not meet all the final obligations with respect to the payment of salaries, gratuities and pensions”.
“The claim by the APC that such matters were raised at the last state congress or at a secret forum is therefore not tenable, misleading and insincere”.
“It is now clear that APC in Benue State has opted to mortgage the interest of the people of the state. The party’s unprovoked attack on Governor Ortom points to where its interest lies”.
“More ridiculous is the fact that APC has become a one-man show in Benue State. It should be on record that the attacks on the governor are coming now because he couldn’t meet some inordinate personal ambitions and interests of those who want to perpetually shortchange the people”.
He said no amount of intimidation or personal attacks can make him to abandon the people whom he said he has chosen to stand with and won’t be distracted now or in the future.
