Maiden King Kosoko Memorial lecture set to hold in Lagos



All is set for the maiden edition of King Kosoko Memorial Lecture, a programme put together by the youths of the Kosoko family of Lagos and in Diaspora, to immortalise the late King Kosoko who reigned as Oba of Lagos from 1845 to 1851.


This year memorial lecture, which is on the theme “The Travail and Triumph of King Kosoko: Lesson for Today’s Leaders”, will hold on Sunday July 29, 2018, at Glover Memorial Hall, Lagos. It will feature cultural parade and exhibition.


Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, will be the Distinguished Guest of Honour, the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the Special Guest of honour, while the Royal Father of the Day, is Oba Rilwan Osuolale Aremu Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos.


Former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, Supo Shasore, SAN, is the lead paper presenter.


Announcing this at a press conference on Sunday in Lagos, the chairman of the local organising committee (LOC), Prince Abiola Kosoko, said the memorial lecture is designed to be an annual event with basic theme that will describe and project the personality behind Kosoko as a King, Oloja, Prince and in-depth analysis of his antecedents throughout his life time.

“This year memorial lecture which is the first edition is on the theme ‘The Travail and Triumph of King Kosoko: Lesson for Today’s Leaders’.

“However, the event is subdivided into three sessions; paper presentation, socio-cultural parade and exhibition of King Kosoko relics.”


The paper presentation, according to him, is the bone of the memorial lecture, where scholars will give in-depth papers on the person King Kosoko was, within and outside Lagos territory.


“The socio-cultural parade will provide a platform for indigenous cultural parade that emanated during the reign of King Kosoko and those that got prominence as a result of his person,” he said.


Explaining further about the exhibition of Kosoko relics, he said: “The Kosoko Youth Forum has for over a decade been gathering relics of this great man towards the establishment of King Kosoko Memorial Museum.

“This year’s King Kosoko Memorial Lecture will also provide the required ambience to exhibit some of these relics for the public to appreciate.


“Though the idea behind this exhibition is to immortalise the historical remains of King Kosoko for tourism purpose, moreover, the King Kosoko Youth Forum will be giving awards to individuals and corporate organisations that have continuously supported and protected the fabric of indigenous Lagos heritage.”
