Sex-for-marks: Stigmatisation fear forces UNILAG girl into hiding

Saturday Telegraph can authoritatively confirm that the former student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Miss Joy Nwanna, who accused a lecturer in the institution’s Department of English, Prof. Segun Awonusi, of sexual harassment, has refused to meet the panel to defend her allegation. This was as the Prof. Chioma Agonma-led panel set up by the university to look into the matter, has failed to reach Miss Nwanna or any of her family members to convince her of the need to come forward to tell her story. However, against all odds, the university is prepared to brief the media on Monday on the progress made so far on the matter and possibly deliver its verdict.

Saturday Telegraph learnt that even before Miss Nwanna took the decision to expose the harassment case, she had made up her mind not to reveal her identity for fear of being stigmatised. Meanwhile, investigations by Saturday Telegraph has revealed that Miss Nwanna, who currently runs an interior decoration business in Wuse Area of Abuja, has her twitter account as @Joy_mark25; Instagram as, @Joy_mark25 and her business instagram page as @premiumluxurybeddings.

But all the accounts, except her business instagram page has been privatised without any link to her posts, while the business instagram account only have photos of bedding materials including duvets displayed without contact details except email address which is; premiumluxurybeddings@ gmail.com. According to sources including one of her classmates at the university, who craved anonymity, “Nwanna does not want the fate that befell Ms. Monica Osagie of the OAU sex scandal to befall her and that was why she has refused to come into the open.” Saturday Telegraph’s efforts to reach her sponsor simply identified as Idighisai Nwanna and her brother who serves as her next of kin, Mr. Samuel Nwanna, were unsuccessful as their phone numbers were not going through.

In a similar development, the university’s attempts at getting the publisher of the pictures, Linda Ikeji Blog to come forward to open up on its source, yielded no result. It would be recalled that Nwanna, in her narration made available to a blog– Linda Ikeji Blog, explained that she had been suffering the harassment for months before she decided to hit the media with the graphic details. She narrated: “Whenever students go to his office for anything he is always trying to touch you. I took pictures of him on one of the days I entered his office. He has made molestation a part of him. I’m even scared for my life in UNILAG.

That’s why I’m reaching out to you so he can be stopped. “He is a professor in the English Department, Faculty of Arts. I am not his first victim. He does this all the time to students. I have completely given up when it comes to academics; he has failed me on tests before. When I talked to him concerning it, he told me I should know what to do and that I am an adult. “I feel so dirty for even allowing such an old man touch me. But he doesn’t even care; as long as you satisfy his wants.

I’m tired of everything. He should be stopped before he ruins the lives of other innocent girls in that English Department. When he touches me I am always in tears, but it doesn’t stop him. Please this is why I am reaching out. All I want is for him to be stopped. He is destroying the mental state of girls in UNILAG.”
