Adamawa State capital, Yola, yesterday came to a standstill following the coming of Dr. Mahmud Halilu Ahmed, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat along Galidima Road in the city.
Ahmed is the youngest brother of President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari.
It was reported that having procured the intent and nomination forms at Abuja’s office of the party, his coming was to formally introduce himself to officials of the party in the state.
However, supporters who thronged the party’s secretariat through various means, including horses said to be provided by one of the traditional rulers in the state, lamented that the leadership style of the incumbent governor was not in the good book of the President.
Meanwhile, supporters of the incumbent governor, Mohammed Jibrilla, expressed fears over the declaration, fearing that the turn out of the mammoth crowd could only mean that the governor may have fallen out of favour at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.
It was reported that the incumbent governor also beat the deadline for the purchase of forms when he did so on Monday, apparently without his media aides knowing even the party officials in the state.
Addressing party leadership in the Secretariat, Ahmed said: “I decided to contest because it was disheartening that no local contractors were deemed fit to benefit in jobs; that is why miscreants abound in the state.”
He pointed out that once he was given the chance, such situation would become a thing of the past, stressing also that the crisis in which youths were living the state was because adequate care was not given to youth development.
The aspirant also believed that he can chase out poverty in the state as the youth were the ones to benefit.
At the end of his speech, the aspirant gave the party leadership N10 million to run the office while twelve 18-seater buses were also delivered to the secretariat.
Speaking at the occasion, the state Chairman of the party, Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, assured the aspirant of a level playing field for all the contestants, adding that the party would ensure the protection of every contestant.
