Al-Makura visits gas explosion site, moves to regulate operators

Nasarawa State government yesterday said it has taken deliberate measures to prevent reoccurrence of the gas explosion that claimed nine lives and injured 37 others.

The government also said it had constituted a committee to regulate activities of inflammable operators, particularly gas businesses, to conform to environmental safety regulation standard aimed at safeguarding lives and property.

Government warned that henceforth, operator of gas businesses in the state must do so in adherence to the relevant regulations or face the wrath of the law.

Governor Tanko Al-Makura dropped the hint when he paid an assessment visit to the scene of gas explosion in Lafia, the state capital.

He said government had beckoned on the Department of Petroleum Resources (PDR) to come to Lafia and conduct assessment of the area with a view to extinguish the gas emission in order to prevent more damage to lives and property.

He said already nine people, including a baby that was being operated and removed from her mother’s womb that was severely burnt, died leaving other 37 with severe burnt.
