The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) senatorial aspirants in Anambra State, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah and Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, have turned down a directive by Governor Willie Obiano, compelling them to step down for the wife of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Bianca ahead of the parties’ primary election for the Anambra South senatorial ticket.
Obiano, who had at a parley announced that there would be no automatic ticket for any aspirant allegedly made a detour when he requested Ukachukwu and Ubah to step down for Bianca.
But the aspirants had insisted that there was no going back as they were ready for the primary elections on the grounds that Bianca was not qualified for the contentious ticket for the National Assembly come next year.
In a statement, Ubah said that he was ready for the primary election, insisting that the party had already reiterated its promise to conduct a free and fair primary election.
He said: “We are preparing for election and I am ready to go for the primaries of my party. The party never told us that it has a preferred candidate, so the issue of stepping down for anybody does not arise. But I cannot tell you of the governor ever called, asking me to step down for anybody.”
He was echoed by Ukachukwu, who spoke through Director-General of his campaign organization, Chief Jude Emecheta, saying “as far as we are concerned we are set for the APGA senatorial primary election and there is no going back. The party has promise us a level playing ground for the exercise and that is what we believe in. My principal is set for the election and I do not believe that the governor as the leader and father of the party would condescend to this level.”
