A fresh crisis is currently rocking the Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the mode of primary to be adopted in electing the party’s candidates ahead of the 2019 general election.
This was as the state Chairman of the party, Dr. Ben Nwoye, yesterday dismissed as ‘illegal and unconstitutional,’ a meeting of some stakeholders presided over by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, where they purportedly adopted direct primary for electing candidates.
Addressing a press conference after the state executive council (SEC) meeting of the party in Enugu, Nwoye accused the minister of plotting with his ‘co-conspirators’ and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agents to plunge the state chapter of the party into crisis.
He called on members of his party and the general public to discountenance Onyeama and his announcement of direct primary, saying that the SEC of the party alongside other stakeholders had already met and adopted a combination of indirect primary and consensus method of electing party candidates and had since communicated same to the national office of the party.
Nwoye alleged that the minister, having failed in his earlier bid to remove him as the party’s chairman to install a stooge, had un-relentlessly resorted to disruptive meetings and sponsorship of law suits against his election as state chairman of the party.
“People believe that falsehood is politics, and that is unfortunate. I’m totally dismayed that the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs has abandoned his office, and was urging one particular interest, forgetting that Enugu State is bigger than a particular interest, one particular interest, meaning a person that wants to vie for Enugu West senatorial district.
“His candidate like himself, is not a politician, is not popular; but he has chosen to allow his personal interest to override and outweigh the interest of Enugu State people.
“For that reason he left his office, abandoned his duty post at the government and people’s expense, returns to Enugu State and convened a meeting of his friends and associates and in an attempt to deceive Enugu State and Nigerian people, attempted to upturn, through a statement, which he issued to press men, that Enugu State had adopted direct primary.
“That is far from the truth. The process of adopting the mode of primary was spelt out in a letter directed to me and jointly signed by our able and dynamic National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, and our highly progressive-minded National Secretary, Hon, M. Buni.
“We were directed to look into direct method, indirect method and consensus.
“Pursuant to that directive, a meeting was properly convened, attended by 57 members of state executive committee, just last Tuesday, the 4th and a resolution was unanimously passed adopting a combination of indirect and consensus modes of primary. The statement was issued to that effect; all the stakeholders, especially those contesting were informed of the mode of primary chosen by the Enugu State executive committee.”
“But because the Hon. Minister has chosen the person he wants to run for governor, he sat in his office and held a meeting with seven persons and directed that one Ben Eche, will become his gubernatorial candidate, and he chose one Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku Nwagwu, as his own adopted flag bearer for Enugu West senatorial district,” Nwoye alleged.
