Fayose to Magu: You have personal hatred against me

Outgoing Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose has accused the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu of harbouring “unprovoked personal hatred and malice” against him.

Fayose who was reacting to the commission’s request to appear before it on Thursday, September 20, 2018, said he would not honour such invitation before October 16 when his tenure as governor would expire.

In the letter, which was dated September 14, the Ekiti governor who also doubles as Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, said to do otherwise would be a violation Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which vested immunity on him as a seating governor.

“As a responsible citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who currently enjoys immunity under Section 308 of the Constitution, it would amount to a breach of the Constitution which I swore to uphold if I appear in your office on any date earlier than 16th October, 2018.

“If done otherwise, it will set a wrong precedent for the constitutional institution that I represent,” he added.

Fayose also took offence at EFCC’s letter to the Nigeria Customs Service to put him on watch-list on the fears that he might elope before the expiration of his tenure to prevent his prosecution.

This, the governor added, ‎”to say the least, is disappointing and betrays your commission’s unprovoked personal hatred and malice against my person.”

He said events in the past few months made him assume that the EFCC has “Presumed me guilt even prior to the commencement of investigation.

“This raises serious question about the impartiality, independence or neutrality of the commission in the matter.”

Fayose noted that he felt “harassed, intimidated and embarrassed by the imputation of crime and the innuendos of criminality underlining your correspondence which has been maliciously circulated widely.”
