FUO, NOTAP sign pact on research, innovation

Owing to the strategic position of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, to midwife research and innovation, especially in the areas of crude oil and gas in the Niger Delta region, the university and the National Office of Technology acquisition (NOTAP) have signed a pack on research administration at the university.

]The National Office of Technology Acquisition Project (NOTAP), however, said during the commissioning of a Research Centre at FUO that this would address international oil companies’ complaints that the country had no competent researchers and state-of-the-art equipment to carry out research activities. According to NOTAP, the companies had complained that those were the reasons they usually take or conduct their research outside the country.

Since NOTAP was created to monitor research activities and the inflow of technologies in the county, the creation of Research Administration Unit at the Federal University, Otuoke, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Seth Acra Jaja, hinted would go a long way in helping the university to research on crude oil in the Niger Delta region. “The Research Administration Unit of the university as a sponsored project will provide quality support to the campus community, research and creative activities, technology transfer and outreach policy initiatives.

“RAU identifies opportunities and facilitate partnership, and oversees the submission of all sponsored project proposals on behalf of the university, negotiates and executes agreements, offers advice and guidance regarding applicable rules and regulations, as well as assists faculty staff and students in proper stewardship of the university sponsored projects and technology transfer initiatives,” the vice-chancellor said. Jaja, however, described research as the core activity of the university, saying yearly the institution conducts sponsored research projects funded with external grants. With those projects, the university, he stressed, would soon come out with research that will provide cure to diseases, unearth artifacts and species of animals, save lives in the face of natural disaster, and expand the perception of the world’s great writers and artists. The university, he noted had been commended by NOTAP for being the first university to establish a research entre in the country.

The vice-chancellor said: “The FUO Strategic Research Roadmap serves as the guidepost for the university to reach its full potential in research and scholarly activities. “The main element of this roadmap is to make FUO one of the best research universities in Nigeria by conducting cuttingedge research, scholarship, and creative activities that develop knowledge and contribute to the economic growth and social advancement of the country and benefit humanity as a whole.” Also, the vice-chancellor, who hailed the establishment of the university research centre, said: “We are doing indigenous based research materials which can compete globally.

We want to see what we can use within the local content to get what we want in order to project the image of this state and the country in general.” The essence of the centre, Jaja said, was not for profit making, insisting that “the university will ensure that it is able to contribute towards solving the societal problems.” At the just concluded capacity building and training workshop for enhancement of intellectual property, culture and innovation in Nigeria and the commissioning of the research centre at the university, the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of NOTAP, Dr. Dan Azumi Ibrahim commended the management for establishing an intellectual property technology and transfer office (a research centre) at the university.
