In view of the forthcoming primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), some legislators are urging for the postponement of resumption of the National Assembly, earlier scheduled for September 25, 2018.
Some of the lawmakers, who spoke to New Telegraph yesterday, argued that there was no point for the National Assembly to resume on September 25 because the legislators would be in their various constituencies participating in the primaries.
Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information, Senator Ben Murray- Bruce (PDP, Bayelsa), told our correspondent that it wouldn’t make sense for the federal Parliament to resume in September because the lawmakers would not be available that day and even in the entire week. He said that though he was not speaking from official standpoint, it would be most appropriate for the resumption to be shifted till after the party primaries.
“I don’t have any official information on the matter but in my personal opinion, it will be better if the National Assembly resumes in October because of the party primaries that are coming up within the period. It doesn’t make sense to resume on the 25th when nobody will be around because members will be in their constituencies for the primaries”, he argued.
Also, speaking on the matter, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Senator Sam Anyanwu, expressed the same opinion as Murray-Bruce, saying that the possibility of the scheduled resumption happening was not there.
He suggested that it would be better for the lawmakers to resume after the primaries because they would be busy with the Programme till the second week of October. “It is better if the resumption is postponed till after the party primaries because members of the National Assembly have to participate in the party primaries which will last till about October 12.
That is my opinion; I am not speaking for the Senate or the National Assembly”, he stated
