Ondo jettisons Mega School concept, renovates schools

Indications have emerged that the Ondo State Government has dropped the Mega Primary School project, initiated by the immediate past administration of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, as it said the state would no longer continue with the construction of mega schools, but rather embark on renovation of dilapidated schools across the state.

The Chairman of State Universal Education Board (SUBEB), Princess Oladunni Odu, who gave the indication during the inspection of the ongoing renovation and construction projects in primary schools, assured parents and teachers of the government’s readiness to complete the ongoing construction and renovation of public primary schools in the state before schools resume for new academic session.

The Mega School concept was thehallmarkof theimmediatepast administration of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko with the construction of the model and mega schools in different parts of the state.

But speaking with reporters while monitoring the level of work done by contractors handling the various projects in the state, Odu regretted that the immediate past government in the state abandoned public primary schools for eight years.

Instead of renovation and construction of public primary schools, Odu, who wondered that the government embarked on wasteful mega school projects, also noted that the Mega Primary Schools which were constructed by Mimiko’s administration were underutilized.

According to her, the construction and renovation of public primary school across the state would be completed and delivered before students resume the 2018 /2019 academic session.

The ongoing primary school projects, Odu further hinted include the construction of 76 containerised toilets and boreholes across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state.

She said: “We will complete them because we have been paying contractors as and when due. I am sure they are speeding up the job.

Some will be ready before resumption, while works are still ongoing after the resumption and we will do our very best to ensure that the children are comfortable.”

Odu said in every local government, at least 20 projects were ongoing, adding that about 50 per cent of the works had been completed, evenassheputthecostimplications at N7.8billion inclusive of the counterpart funds and the state government’s funds.
