One dies as truck crushes commercial bus

A truck driver and his conductor escaped lynching by angry mob after a collision between their truck and a commercial bus left one person dead in Aba, Abia State. The truck, which was fully loaded with bags of rice and was descending from the Ogbor-Hill towards the heart of the commercial city of Aba, lost control and collided with a commercial bus said to be driving against traffic.

The victim, identified as Saviour, who hailed from Akwa Ibom State, died on the spot of the accident which occurred on the popular Ogbor-Hill Waterside Bridge on Aba-Ikot Ekpene Expressway. Other passengers in the commercial bus with registration number Anambra State JJT 281 ZH, which collided with the truck, escaped death by a whisker. Witnesses said the driver of the truck did all he could to ensure that he controlled and stir the truck to safety but it rammed into the commercial bus. One of the witnesses, Mr. George Okeke, said “the truck driver, who was carrying rice, lost control of his vehicle. People tried calling Saviour, but before he knew what was happening, the truck crushed him and the car. It was a really pathetic scene”.

Colleagues of the deceased took to the road to protest the killing and caused gridlock for several hours before the arrival of some security agents who evacuated the body of the deceased to the mortuary. Some witnesses, however, said some security agents and members of the public stole numerous bags of rice. They described the situation where people steal from accident victims as the highest point of man’s inhumanity to man. The whereabouts of the driver and the conductor of the truck were unknown. But some people said that the driver and conductor took to their heels to avoid being lynched by angry mob.
