Oyo, Osun, Jigawa declare holiday over Islamic New year

The Governments of Oyo, Osun and Jigawa states, yesterday pronounced today workfree day in the respective state to mark the Islamic New Year. Today marks the new Islamic Calendar year, Muharram 1, (Hijrah) 1440 AH. The declaration in Oyo State was made through a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Olalekan Alli.

 

It reads, “The governor has declared Tuesday, September 11, 2018, a work-free day in the state, to commemorate and celebrate the new Islamic Calendar year 1st Muharram, (Hijrah) 1440 AH.”

 

Osun Government’s position was contained in a statement signed by Mr Adebisi Obawale, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, in Osogbo. Obawale said Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s administration had since inception celebrated Hijrah as a public holiday. He urged Muslims and people of different faiths to imbibe the lessons of the Hijrah by abstaining from sinful practices for a new life and conduct that would add value to the state and the country at large.

 

Alhaji Isma’il Ibrahim, the spokesman, office of the State Head of the Civil Service, announced the holiday in a statement in Dutse on Monday. The statement said the government felicitated with Muslim faithful in the state and around the world for witnessing the New Year.

 

“The state government, therefore, urged the citizens to reflect and live their lives based on the teachings of Islam and practice of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
