Former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, said he would revisit the 2014 National Conference and send a bill to the National Assembly for possible amendment of the constitution, if elected president next year. Jang, who is seeking the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019, said this would bring about the expected restructuring of the country.
The former governor, who spoke to newsmen yesterday shortly after submitting his nomination form, also said the nation requires “restructuring seriously because there is total imbalance in the federation and the federal system.
“When I talk of restructuring, we cannot decree restructuring; restructuring has to come from under constitutional amendments as we cannot throw away the constitution completely since there has to be a government in place.” He promised to use his military background to tackle insecurity in the country, noting that he served as a military governor in most of the states that are now under crisis.
Jang recalled that he was military governor of old Gongola State which is now Adamawa and Taraba, and the old Benue and Plateau States. He believes that the military should leave civil role and go back to its constitutional responsibility of territory defence of the country.
“Today, you find soldiers mounting road blocks. It was unheard of during our time. “If there is a proper security in this country, there is no need for even the police mounting road blocks not to talk of the military. “The federal police will be given assignment covered by law in federal areas, and state police will be created to take care of localities in every state to ensure peaceful coexistence,” Jang said.
