…as Musa hails Seychelles win
After putting the Super Eagles African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign back on track with a 3-0 away win against the Pirates of Seychelles, Coach Gernot Rohr has set his sight on getting four points from the two-legged encounter against Group E leaders, Libya. The North African side currently tops the group with four points after recording a goalless draw with hosts South Africa on Saturday who are also on four points after their opening day victory over the Eagles; while Nigeria, by the virtue of their triumph over Seychelles occupied the third position with three points. Libya will be facing Nigeria over two legs in October with the first leg expected to take place in Kaduna while Eagles will be playing the second leg away in Tunisia within four days. “We’re now only a point behind Libya and we have to win when we welcome them. We have to get at least four points against them,” Rohr said.
“They did a good job in South Africa (0-0 with Bafana Bafana in Durban). We need a good, big pitch for our wingers and technical football. “Our injured players like (William) Ekong, Ola Aina and Mikel (Obi) will be back. And we now have two new players (from the Seychelles match) – (Samuel) Kalu had a very interesting performance and (Semi) Ajayi did very well as a defender.
“The group is progressing and we are finding new possibilities to replace some of our players.” Meanwhile, Super Eagles stand-in captain against Seychelles, Ahmed Musa, has hailed the level of the team’s victory against the Pirates.
The Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia forward scored the first goal of the encounter after rifling home a powerful shot with his left foot. The goal was his 17th for the senior national team. Musa posited afterwards that the victory now puts Nigeria in a good position to qualify for the Nations Cup in Cameroon next year.
The former Leicester of England striker wrote on his social media account: “Great team victory! Three points to help us qualify for the African Cup of Nations. Happy to get a goal. Up Eagles.” Musa has now scored three times in his last four outings for Nigeria, making him the country’s most in-form striker.
