…as Nigeria aim to hurt Liberia in friendly

Ex-international, Sam Sodje, has charged the Super Eagles Manager Gernot Rohr, and his employers Nigeria Football Federation to intensify efforts in persuading winger Victor Moses to return to the national team fold.

Moses, last month, announced his sudden retirement from international duty, citing family reasons for his decision and Sodje said he was not shocked unlike many other Nigerians.

The former West Brom FC defender said although the player’s decision should be respected, there was a need to reach out to him so as to know the real reasons he quit with a view to persuading him to rescind the decision.

He said at any rate, the Chelsea defender remained one of the best players from the country and it was good to always have a strong squad for international duty.

“He must have his reasons; retiring at the age of 27 will raise eyebrows but I won’t say I was surprised. When it comes to welfare or player’s state of mind you never can tell; only Moses knows why retiring from international football at this crucial time is best for him.

“I think it’s fair enough for the federation to speak to him, the coach also has a work to do in that regard; as it’s always good to have all your best players available for selection, so they should reach out to him and find out what happened,” he said.

However, Rohr seems to have put Moses’ situation behind him as he insisted that Bordeaux winger Samuel Kalu is the player that will replace the Chelsea star in the national team.

”We saw some of them (new players) today, Kalu performed well, he won the penalty, he is very quick, very explosive and we had to find somebody on the right side to replace Victor Moses and he is the man who can do that,” Rohr said after the Eagles defeated Seychelles in the qualifying match for the 2019 African Cup of Nations on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Rohr’s men will attempt to spoil the mood for Liberia as they confront their west-African neighbours in a friendly to celebrate their President George Weah at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex today.

Top Eagles’ stars such as Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi and Leon Balogun are part of the 13 foreign-based players listed for the tie.

The team arrived in the country from Seychelles on Monday (yesterday) are travelled for the Liberia tie today (Tuesday).
