Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), the pioneer higher education institution and cradle of technical education in the country, and the Chinese Polytechnic, Guangzhou Panyu, are collaborating on vocational education, especially in the area of provision of technical assistance to the college.
Under the partnership, the Chinese Polytechnic and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCEC), a Chinese construction company based in Nigeria, with their manpower capacity will provide technical assistance to graduates of YABATECH, especially in the area of rail and road construction and transportation development. According to Vice President of Guangzhou Panyu Polytechnic, Mr. Liu Jiahuan, with China and Nigeria’s long standing socio-economic relationship, it is expected that CCEC will take advantage of the relationship to keying into Nigeria’s transportation development via rail transportation. Jiahuan, who described the proposed technical assistance, as a corporate social responsibility to the college and the country, also noted that Nigeria’s achievements in the area of technical education were known through the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
“Through the Railway Corporation, we realise that YABATECH, the cradle of higher learning, is one of the best institutions in Nigeria and we are desirable to cooperate with the institution in the area of technical and vocational training,” he added. He noted that under the agreement, the two institutions would cooperate and share academic ideas in mechanical, civil, architecture and construction engineering technology respectively. Meanwhile, the college is still savouring the outstanding performance of its sports team at the just concluded 19th National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) Nigeria Polytechnic Senior Staff (NIPOSSGA), hosted by the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu.
The bi-annual sporting fiesta for Nigeria polytechnics featured 38 polytechnics across the country that competed for medals in the competition. YABATECH contingent led by its Chief Coach, Yamala Frederick, who also doubled as the Public Relations Officer of NIPOSSGA participated in 17 games and won nine medals, but was defeated in the final of the football competition by Federal Polytechnic, Offa through penalty shoot-out. To sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) were the Deputy Rector Academics, Dr. Taye Oyelola, who represented the Rector, Mr. Obafemi Omokungbe and representatives of Guangzhou Panyu Polytechnic, led by its Vice President, Mr. Liu Jiahuan, as well as the representative of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Lagos District Manager, Mr. Jerey Oche, an engineer.
