Ekpo carpets Rohr over home-based stars

…says Eagles should take game against Libya serious

Former Super Eagles defender, Friday Ekpo, has carpeted national team coach, Gernot Rohr, over his inability to give the home-based players opportunity in the team.
Speaking with Saturday Telegraph, Ekpo said there is need for the coach to return to the country and monitor the leagues so as to develop his own players rather than waiting for readymade players from European countries.
“I want him to come back home, we have a league and there is need to look inward too,” Ekpo said.
“Let’s look at Germany and other top countries, even if they have all their players across the world, they will still pick some players from the home front for any competition.
“Let Rohr try and get players from home. He should start building his own players instead of waiting for youngsters from other countries to come and play for Nigeria.”
On the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya, Ekpo charged the Super Eagles to take the game seriously, especially the first leg.
According to him, a good performance in Uyo will make the second leg much easier as the team continues their quest for qualification for the competition they failed to be part of in the last two editions.
He added: “We are playing first at home, so we must take our home game very important, we must play to our strength and get the result so that we won’t have any excuse going away.
“By winning the game well in Nigeria, we will put them under pressure on their home turf. While they will be coming out to win, we on our part will be keeping the ball and force them to play to our strength which will give us the day.
“We all know North Africa teams’ antics and we should not fall for them. We should overpower them and move ahead.”
