World record whiskey sells for N406m

The whiskey lovers should be proud to know that their beloved ‘poison’ of choice was considered valuable enough to be sold at a staggering price of £848.750.

The 60 year old rare bottle of scotch whiskey was produced in 1926 by Macallan who commissioned Valerio Adami, a popular Italian pop artist and British Peter Blake, to design the label which was for a limited edition of 24 bottles. Adami designed 12 while Blake designed 12 bottles.

The whiskey was sold at Bonham in Edinburg to an anonymous buyer. According to news.sky.com, Martin Green of the auction house said, “I am delighted at this exceptional result.

It is a great honour to have established a new world record, and particularly exciting to have done so here in Scotland, the home of whisky”. It has been described as the Holy Grail of whiskey.

Bonham said the previous record was set by the auction house in may when they sold another bottle of Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 for £814,081 which in Naira translates to N381m.

Valerio Adami, now aged 83, is famous for painting bold, flat forms outlined in thick, black lines, in a style reminiscent of comic art. While it is not known how many of the rare bottles of whiskey still exist, one of the bottles was said to have been destroyed in an earthquake in Japan in 2011. It is also believed that at least one of them had been opened and drunk. That leaves 20 unaccounted for.

Keep your eyes peeled, it might appear around you some place.
