A 23-year-old man, Adeoye Ikugbayigbe, has been arrested by the police in Ogun State for allegedly beheading a septuagenarian identified as Mama Funmilayo Shada.
The suspect was said to have committed the crime at Abigi in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of the state. It was learnt that both the suspect and the deceased had been having a running battle over a portion of land.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said in a statement that the severed head of the 72-year-old Shada had been recovered. Oyeyemi said the son of the deceased, Ekundayo, reported the incident to the police.
The PPRO explained that Ekundayo, while on the way to meet his mother at the farm, met Ikugbayigbe on the road, holding a polythene bag. He said: “But as soon as he sighted (Ekundayo), the suspect dropped the bag and ran into the bush. This aroused his suspicion and he quickly ran to check his mother but could not find her.
“He later came back to check the bag dropped by the suspect only for him to discover his mother’s severed head and her wrist in the said bag. “He quickly reported the case to the police and the DPO, Abigi Division, SP Komolafe Omoniyi, led detectives to the scene, combed the surrounding bush and finally got the suspect arrested.
“On interrogation, he confessed to the commission of the crime, claiming that he has been having running battle with the deceased over a portion of land.”
Oyeyemi added that the severed head and the remains of the deceased had been deposited in the mortuary while the machete used by the suspect had also been recovered.
He disclosed that the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered that the suspect be transferred to Homicide Section of State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation.
