Six persons yesterday lost their lives while seven others were injured in an auto accident in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The accident, which involved a commercial bus with registration no AKL 22 YY and a black Murano Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked HAW 565 AA, occurred near Ukwuachi Junction on Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway.
The two occupants of the Murano died on the spot while the driver of the bus and two others died on the way to the hospital.
Bodies of the victims have been deposited in the mortuary at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA 2) while the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment.
A witness, Wilson Igboke, told our correspondent that the bus was coming from Enugu while the SUV was coming from Abakaliki when the two vehicles collided.
He noted that the driver of the bus tried to avoid the ‘jeep’ but could not as the driver of the SUV was on high speed.
A team of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Ebonyi State branch, led by a National Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Nworie, quickly mobilised to the scene of the accident and assisted the police in evacuating the victims.
“We got a phone call that there was an accident at Ukwuachi and we quickly mobilised our members to the scene.”
