An advocacy group, Imo Liberation Movement (ILM), has called on Governor Rochas Okorocha, to provide answers to the various enquiries on the general state of affairs in the state.
Local publishers in the state under the platform of Independent Newspaper Publishers Association (INPA), had also recently made a direct demand on the governor asking for a detailed account of fund running into a trillion naira including council funds and the Paris Club refund received by the state.
Addressing journalists shortly after an enlarged executive meeting held in Owerri over the weekend, ILM’s Director General, Dr. Ogechi Ikpemo, described the organisation as a movement that will midwife the expected positive change in Imo State.
He also called on the government to as a matter of urgency publish the accounts of the state. He said: “We have tolerated this for too long, this government’s opaque administration and questionable secrecy in the handling of critical issues of governance particularly the finances of the state.
A situation where the governor acts as if he is presiding over the affairs of Rochas Foundation and not governing a state, will no longer be acceptable going forward.
As an elected person, he is bound by a social contract to the people to be accountable, transparent, just and fair. “We observed that citizens of the state who dared to ask questions over the near collapse of governance in the state received no answers to their questions.
Government has also continued to hurl insults at respected citizens for daring to ask questions or express an opinion.
“This Telemundo approach of this government must stop. Imo Liberation Movement will not relent in our effort to bring this government to accountability.
The state deserves better governance than the mockery of democracy that has become a norm in the state”.
Dr. Ikpemo, a COREN certified engineer and renowned rights activist, maintained that no amount of intimidation will deter ILM from its ongoing sensitization and mobilisation of all the sectors of the state.
“The aggressive awareness campaign has been commissioned and the turnout is very satisfactory.
It really has shown that people are willing to confront the anomalies that have been going on in the state.
“I urge Imo citizens and residents not to despair but to be brave and courageous as we seek to liberate the state from the shackles of ineptitude, fraud, deceit and recover the destiny of our dear state with a view to rebuilding the state of our dream. It is a herculean task and we are ready for the challenges”, he also said.
