Sacked NLC chair sues Ogun govt

Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ogun State Council, Comrade Akeem Ambali, has sued the state government over an alleged wrongful termination of appointment.

Ambali, who was sacked as Deputy Director (Social Welfare), Sagamu Local Government Area of the state on November 1, 2016, dragged the government to National Industrial Court (NIC), Ikoyi, Lagos. In a suit number NICN/ LA/41/2017 supported by statement of fact and affidavit, the labour leader asked the court to declare his dismissal as “illegal and unconstitutional.”

The suit listed the Local Government Service Commission, Civil Service Commission and Attorney- General and Commissioner for Justice as the first, second and third defendants respectively. Ambali sought an order compelling the defendants to reinstate him as well as an order directing the defendants to pay outstanding salaries and allowances owed him from October 2016 till the determination of the suit.

The NLC chairman faulted the state government for not granting him a fair hearing before his dismissal from service despite a letter of appeal written to Governor Ibikunle Amosun dated November 25, 2016. Amosun had approved Ambali’s dismissal after a panel of inquiry set up to investigate the alleged misconduct of executive members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT).
