Suicide: Ambode approves marine respond squad

…as Lagos records 80,000 emergency calls daily

Piqued by high rate of suicide being committed by some Lagos residents especially in the lagoon, indication yesterday emerged that the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode had concluded plan to set up Marine Respond Squad.

The squad would monitor, rescue and manage any impending disaster in the lagoon. This was even as the state also raised an alarm over the increasing rate of emergency calls in the state, saying that the state had received 80,000 emergency calls through the state emergency and command and control room located in Alausa.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting with emergency responders and residents held at the Lagos State Chambers of Commerce and Industry Building, Alausa, Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr Seye Oladejo said there was the need for the stakeholders to have an effective collaboration among Rapid Respond Squad, State Health Environmental Monitoring Unit, SEHMU, Lagos State Waterways Agency, LASWA, FRSC, LASTMA, local divers, fishermen, fisher women, Vehicle Inspection Service, VIS and other people who had played a role or the other in the management of emergencies in the state.
