Former junior champion and aspiring Athletic Federation of Nigeria athletes’ representative, Sunday Adeleye, has commended the Sports Ministry for enacting sports federation election guidelines that guarantees mass participation and fresh ideas.
The former 200 and 400m runner who was in Abuja at the unveiling of the guidelines by the sports minister, Solomon Dalung, last week noted that the guidelines would ensure good innovations in the administration of sports at the federal and state levels.
“This will be the first time stakeholders will have a say in the affairs of those that rule the federations,” he said. “I am pleased that there will be no more winner-takes-all syndrome and with the guidelines, no person will lord it over others by virtue of knowing those in government.”
The Kaduna-based athlete insisted that his intention to participate in the sports federation was to make his own contributions to better the lots of athletes who according to him had been punished enough through lack of welfare and adequate competitions at the national and local levels.
Adeleye commended the sports minister for his foresight and willingness to change the way sports federations are run in the country. Meanwhile, forms for aspiring candidates will be available at the sports ministry from this week in Abuja.
