…clears the air on Eagles’ captaincy tussle
Super Eagles Manager, Gernot Rohr, has described midfielder Ogenyi Onazi as a good team leader in response to his decision to name the player as vicecaptain of the team.
Rohr surprisingly named Onazi as captain for the friendly against Senegal last week in London even when Ahmed Musa, the then substantive vice to Mikel Obi was in the team.
The Eagles Manager also named Elderson Echiejile as the vice-captain for the friendly encounter which ended 1-1 at the Hive Stadium in London.
“I saw leadership qualities in him. He is a good team leader that can carry other along and we need such to move forward for the task ahead of us,” he said. Rohr however confirmed that Chinabased Mikel remained the Captain of the Super Eagles.
“Mikel is still the captain while Onazi is the vice. That is how I want it and we are going to play our games with that arrangement,” he noted. The coach also explained why he did not invite more than one home based player for the match, saying that it was largely due to logistics reasons.
“We all saw the way visa affected our second game and even delayed some of our players. I knew visa would be an issue and moreover the bulk of our players are abroad and so we decided to assemble in London for the friendlies. We will consider domestic league players in future,” Rohr added.
