Umahi bans coke, sprite, fanta

Ebonyi State Governor, Dave  Umahi Tuesday banned the  serving and consumption of Coca-Cola, Sprite and Fanta products  at government functions in the state. Apparently worried by reports alleging that some soft drinks in the country are dangerous to human health, the governor banned the soft drinks. Umahi placed the ban on Coke, Fanta and Sprite during a meeting with Traditional rulers and Town Union Executives in the state. Consumer protection council raises concern on Lucozade, Mirinda

The Consumer Protection Council, (CPC), has called for further investigation of soft drinks sold in Nigeria, following the discovery that the benzoic acid in Mirinda (a product of Seven Up Bottling Company) and Lucozade (a product of Suntory) is higher than the Nigerian regulatory standard of 250mg/kg. The benzoic levels of both drinks are said to be up to 330mg/kg and 323.53mg/kg respectively.
